Collecting rainwater, how much can a roof really give you?

I read that a small roof can collect a surprising amount of water, but I wanted real numbers. Everyone says “it adds up,” which isn’t very helpful when you’re deciding what to buy. I wanted to know whether a barrel or a tank made sense.
