Choose by the material, not the machine

The fastest way to buy the wrong cutter is to shop by tool name instead of by what you are cutting. Tile, steel, concrete and timber each want a different blade and a different machine, and mixing cutting tools across materials is how blades crack and edges chip. When buyers ask us to recommend cutting tools, our first question is never about budget. It is what material, how thick, and wet or dry.

Tile, marble and stone

For tiles and marble, a marble cutter with the right diamond blade gives a clean edge without shattering the surface. When water is not an option, a mask rated for fine dust and a vacuum at the cut are the minimum, not the nice-to-have. The visible cloud settles; the particles that hurt you are the ones you cannot see hanging in the air an hour later.

Blade diameter and speed belong together

A blade is rated for a maximum safe speed, and larger blades are rated slower because their rim travels faster at the same rpm. Fit a big blade to a fast machine beyond its rating and it can come apart under load. Match the blade diameter and arbor to the machine, and respect the printed speed limit every time.

Blade type matters as much as size. Diamond blades last far longer in stone and concrete than abrasive wheels, but they cost more up front, so for a shop that cuts stone daily they pay back and for one that cuts it twice a month they may not. That is a genuine judgement call, and it depends on your volume more than on any rule.

Handheld or bolted to the bench

Cutting generates heat, in the blade and in the motor. A continuous run through thick material warms the tool, and pushing past that without a pause is how motors fail early. Give the machine short rests on long jobs, and keep the vents clear so it can shed heat. Wattage buys you headroom here: a stronger motor runs cooler at the same task than a smaller one worked to its limit. How long you can run before a rest is needed depends on the material and the heat around you, which on an Indian site in May is not a small factor, so treat the machine's warmth as the honest signal rather than a stopwatch.

One more habit worth building: keep a spare blade for each material on the van.
