The Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) is a very important requirement for those who want to become teachers at the elementary school level in Assam. The TET is conducted based on the provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009 and National Council for Teacher Education. It is important for candidates to be aware that qualification in TET is only one of the conditions for recruitment as per the relevant teacher recruitment notification, other academic, professional and conditions are also applicable. If you are keen on exploring Assam Government Jobs you should be aware of the latest guidelines of TET before applying for any Teaching Jobs.

What Is TET in Assam?

Teacher Eligibility Test is a test conducted to check if the candidate has the necessary aptitude and knowledge related to teaching at elementary level.

Under the RTE Act, it is mandatory for the candidate to clear TET to be appointed as a teacher in those schools which are under the relevant provisions of the RTE Act.

The processes related to TET in Assam will be done by the education authorities of Assam, namely State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and Samagra Shiksha Axom for the respective examinations and recruitment process.

Candidate should keep in mind that:

  • TET is an eligibility test, not an appointment test.

  • The candidate must have the necessary qualifications as well.

  • The eligibility criteria may vary depending on the TET notice.

  • The appointments for government teaching posts will take place separately under the recruitment rules.

Assam TET Paper I and Paper II

Paper I – Lower Primary Level

Paper I is meant for candidates who desire to become eligible to teach in the Lower Primary school, i.e., classes from I-V.

The NCTE has prescribed the teacher-education qualification like Senior Secondary with the prescribed marks together with an appropriate elementary education diploma/degree depending on the precise requirement of the qualification and the exam.

Paper II – Upper Primary Level

Paper II is concerned with the teaching of the Upper Primary school i.e., classes from VI-VIII. It is necessary for the candidates to satisfy the academic/professional qualification for the level and the subject.

It is better to refer to the latest notification issued by the Assam TET for the specific qualification, subject and teacher-training courses.

Special Assam TET 2026

In regard to the year 2026, Assam had released an official Special Assam TET notification for Lower Primary and Upper Primary level for medium of instruction such as Bodo, Garo, Manipuri and Hmar. As per this notification, the examination was meant for permanent residents of Assam only, and those candidates who qualify the examination would become eligible for the recruitment of elementary teachers on the basis of having necessary academic and professional qualifications.

It is important for the candidates since the TET qualification needs to be taken into account along with other requisites of the teaching job.

Educational and Professional Qualification

  • Academic Qualification: Such as Senior Secondary, Graduation or any other qualifying prescribed by the rules for that specific level of teaching.

  • Professional Qualification: It may be D.El.Ed., B.El.Ed., B.Ed. or any other prescribed qualification for teachers as per the rules applicable.

  • TET Qualification: It will be necessary to have the prescribed TET exam cleared where required by recruitment rules.

  • Subject Requirement: There could be a requirement of a specific combination of subjects for certain Upper Primary or subject-based vacancies.

  • Language Requirement: The requirements of language and medium may be prescribed in the Assam recruitment notification.

TET Syllabus and Exam Preparation

The syllabus is determined by the paper and examination notice. The subjects covered under Paper I in the 2026 Special Assam TET include:

  • Child Development and Pedagogy

  • Environmental Studies

  • Mathematics

  • Language I

  • Language II - English

On the other hand, for Paper II, the syllabus included Child Development and Pedagogy, languages, English and the subject areas of Mathematics, Science and Social Science depending upon the teaching stream of the candidate.

TET Qualification vs Government Teacher Recruitment

One of the most critical considerations in respect of Assam Government Jobs that the candidates must keep in mind is that TET eligibility must not be taken as an assurance of selection as a government teacher.

The general procedure may include:

  1. Attaining the relevant academic qualification.

  2. Clearing the required professional qualification in teacher training.

  3. Clearing the TET test.

  4. Submitting application for a teacher recruitment notice.

  5. Satisfying post specific requirements for eligibility and reservation.

  6. Other requirements of selection as stipulated by the recruiting authority.

D.El.Ed and the Teaching Career Path

Even candidates who have not met the elementary teacher training requirement yet can check out accredited D.El.Ed programs as well. SCERT Assam gave notice about Pre-Entrance Test (PET)-2026 for admission to two years of D.El.Ed program in NCTE-accredited Teacher Education Institutes in Assam, for the year 2026. This is particularly mentioned that having this diploma will not automatically make one eligible for employment in government elementary schools.

This point is important in planning one’s teaching career since professional education fulfils an eligibility criterion, but employment is another thing.

Documents to Keep Ready

The aspirants must keep their documents up to date prior to appearing in TET or any other teacher recruitment process. As per the notice, these documents can be:

  • Educational qualification certificates and marksheets

  • D.El.Ed/B.Ed or other professional qualification certificate

  • TET certificate or result details

  • Age proof

  • Permanent residence/domicile documents, wherever required

  • Caste/category certificate, if applicable

  • Disability certificate, where applicable

  • Recent photograph and signature

  • Valid identity proof

  • Other documents specifically requested in the recruitment notification

Conclusion

It is important for candidates who are intending to make a career in the government school field to follow the latest TET guidelines. TET is only one of the criteria that determines eligibility for relevant teaching opportunities, and eligibility depends upon meeting academic, professional and recruitment specific criteria. If candidates are interested in Assam Government Jobs, they need to go for Assam Government Notification from SCERT Assam and Samagra Shiksha Axom and check each and every requirement before applying for the jobs.
